So the Art Walk in downtown Long Beach was a little different than those I had been used to going to. With the great weather everything was outside and there was a good mix of craft, art, and good food. Long Beach, California’s art walk takes place the second Saturday of every month (right after L.A.’s artwalk on the second Thursdays, so hit both events in one week!).
Some of my favorites ranged from robotic cartoon stickers to spray paint filled canvases, all in all, I was able to see a range of interesting work and people. Downtown Long Beach is also around a lot of second hand and vintage shops that enabled me to pick up a Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin vinyl (score!). One particular shop: Open was particularly interesting because not only did it house interesting used books and records, but also had a space for local and smaller publications and music. I also made a point to pick up a pack of “artist trade cards” which even came with my own soap sample. If you are in the mood for some good coffee, I’d say head over to the Portfolio Coffee House and order yourself a Spanish Mocha and a banana cream tart. I wanted to lick the plate. : )
The two artists I was more drawn to during the art walk were Andrew from ARY-Studio and Rhett Johnson . Andrew’s work really intrigued me because it was very fun and there was actually a lot of detail in each of the work- which there were very small and over 1,000 of them. At the Art Walk he was selling stickers- very small, colorful , fun stickers. I feel his work has a lot of potential in the commercial and fine art fields if he decides to go that way. I took my two stickers and personalized my wallet with it. ^ ^

Rhett Johnson’s work reminded me a lot of the street art you see around L.A. and Long Beach area, but confined in a canvas. I wish I could have had the chance to meet the artist (I did not see him around) to ask him why he chose canvas rather than any other medium, but his work was quite interesting. Loved the narrative the subjects provoked and the commentary they seemed to have.

All in all, I had a great time walking around looking at art, looking through the local shops, and sipping on delicious local coffee. : )
